Africa is better off with Western Education

Hello all,
I decided to check out this blog site after my friend Mark Gaya told me about it.

I read most of the postings/comments by individuals. I enjoyed reading them. However, as most posting is all about African identity, intelligent, language confusion, lack of development etc. I would like to tell you all that (I respect your opinions), but there is a new face of Africa!

Africa has improved a lot from what you guys are talking about. Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Nnamdi Azikwe of Nigeria, Nelson Mandela of South Africa are the frontline leaders who stood and fought for liberation and freedom in Africa. Today, we are reaping the benefits.

European education has done more good than harm.It enables us to contribute meaningfully to world issues such as peace, economy, religion etc. People like Wole Soyinka of Nigeria (A nobel prize winner) and the former United Nation Secretary (I can't remember his name now) have made African proud as a continent.

A tour of most African big cities such as Tripoli, Lagos and Abuja, Accra, Johanessburg, Cairo etc is a testimony that there is a big growth/development in Africa. However, most foreigners do not like to visit cities in Africa, they prefer taking pictures in the countryside. And those that stayed in the cities never ever saw any lion crossing the road.

Talking about slave trade and loss of indentity is not what occupied most educated African minds right now. Our priorities is how to develop our youths leadership skills, organize our communities, develop rural areas, train our people how to use technology so that we can quickly move forward.Talking about race, identity, reparation, western education and the other negative thoughts will not move us forward.

There is a new face for Africans everywhere and that is to distinguished yourself, compete by mastering western education, travel and learn other people cultures, skills and use the knowledge gained to develop your own community/country.

Thank you all,
Wally Adesina, Ph.D.

As an African, I feel that my history is very important to me. It explains why I am where I am; it explains the social, political and economic structures that I have found in place that I would otherwise take foregranted. It explains the current social dynamics and relationships across class and race.
My point is that our experiences today are impacted by our past. Is it naive pre- occupation to consider the political status quo in Kenya for example from its origin the colonial days? How can this generation change the political system without deriving the nature of our perception of power and power structures from our colonial past? How do we try to reclaim what was ours, strong and beautiful, but most importantly, ours, without discovering where and how we let go of it in the first place? How do we defend our own, own what is ours and perpetuate the same e.g. our cultural practices, without examining their cultrual importance and where and how they lost their value?
This generation is interested in investigating the past. It is interested in correcting history by re- telling it from our world view, our experiences, and our values. It is also interested in redefining the continent's future according to their understanding of the "truth" of their history. All these cannot be done without discussing or interrogating our past and how other cultures have impacted our history and consequently our present.
True, there are those who prefer to work with the present to chart the future; to work with the systems that exist despite their origin and their implications on other aspects of the life we are trying to improve. Those are doing what their conviction allows them to do and that is fine.
But I feel that there is a portion of Africans (such as myself) that want to reclaim what was theirs. It is not enough to be at par with the world, but to be a resourceful contributor from one's own platform. And this cannot be achieved- I feel- without direction form the past.
Better? That would not be the word I would use. Better is relative, depending on cultural interpretation. All that this education has done is to open up access to opportunities as defined by the current dominant culture. The words I would use are "we got with the program!" it was the only way...

Well, thanks for your response. Let's look at your comments to my former posting this way (You may not understand this, but I will say it).
A. Whom did you want to complain to about African colonial past? The world, this new generation who have nothing to do about what happened in the past?
B. You can not change your identity as African even with the best western education.
C. This is 21st century, you can not blame the present generation for the mistakes of past generation. They are innocent.

I am an African, and will always be. I will wear my African native dress in Washington DC, to the White House if invited, go to groceries store in Canada, USA, London in my native attire. I will speak my language in public places in America and in their buses, train, and restaurant. I will organize lectures on Africa heritage/culture to promote my identity. However, I will not put blame on African colonia past on innocent present generation.

Thanks again,
Wally Adesina, Ph.D.

it is true that our present ,in as much as we want to ingore it does rely on our past and maybe our future.a fellow student in one of my international relations classes said that africa will never raise from the economic setback she is in why?because the black people are foolish.mind you that was a comment from a pure african!with such an attitude are we going to move 2 any new heights?i do agree that we need new ways of self-reliance as africans but how can we come up with these ideas if w forever remain under the dark shadow of our colonial masters;that the whites are superior?going into kenyan politics for a while one of the presidential candidates got an american in his quest for political help.is this how we are giong to revive our countries by going after the very ideologies we know are strangling the very breath out of us?correct me if i am wrong but this leader definately does not have the average kenyan's interest @ heart.we need to get out of this 'slavery' cocoon we have gotten into and use the ideologies we already have in an african way just as we did for the western christian songs that were introduced to us.it will be for our independence and freedom.

Dr. Wally Adesina believes that Western education has done more good than harm in Africa; i completely disagree. Please read on:

If symptoms persist, seek history’s advice!

Greetings brethren and Sistren,
I would like to offer my ‘non-PhD.’ response to Dr. Wally Adesina who recently graced our blog with his contention that ‘Africa is better off with Western Education’ and also comment on one of his responses.

My first reaction was a bewildered one- what is ‘Western Education’ anyway? Does he mean Language, Science and Technology, Morals, Values, Sanitation, History, or perhaps Civilization? You see, thinking the way I think, I could not be surprised that we have educated Africans (read Western Educated Africans) who still believe that Africa is better off with Western Education. My first interaction with such ideology was
in some Political Science class I took around my second year at the University. This lecturer was trying hard to convince us that all the ‘development’ we had in Africa- the road networks (at least those that are still usable), the hospitals, the Churches, the schools (Primary to University education) - that all these things were here because of the White mans divine acknowledgement of his ‘Burden’ to teach the Black ‘Heathens’ in the name of Colonialism.

It is obviously difficult to determine what this ‘Western Education’ exactly means. However, that will not stop me from raising my point. Western Education at its most basic should connote the values, principles and philosophy of life that is distinctly Western. In this case, that would mean the European values, principles and philosophy of life- which we can collectively term the Eurocentric way of life. If this is what Dr. Adesina believes to be a progressive force in Africa, then I must disagree with him furiously. In doing so, ill also suggest the contrary to what our learned elder has mentioned- Africa is still lagging behind because of Eurocentric Education. My logic is simple: if you play a game with someone who developed the game, set its rules, and reserves the power to change the rules at his/her own convenience, and expect to beat him/her at the game- then you are as close to madness as Greece is to
Eurocentric way of life. I am not the only one who knows that this Western Education we so divinely revere is one of the biggest setbacks to Africa’s advancement in the world. Take for example the one-time ‘Eurocentric’ Leopold Sedar Senghor- who became the first black president of Senegal. Senghor
grew up amidst the French colonialist project of ‘assimilation’, and it took this man many years of living in the ‘Metropole’ or the ‘Mother Nation’ of France for him to realize the destructive potency of this Western Education. Liberating himself from this alien way of life, Senghor and his other comrades developed what has come to be known as the ‘Cultural project of pan africanism’ i.e. the Negritude philosophy. This philosophy is, in my point of view, what people who believe that Western Education has
done more good than harm in Africa need a heavy dosage of. The Negritude philosophy is a revolutionary philosophy for minds that are strongly in bondage of
the Eurocentric prism. Because it is an Afrocentric philosophy, Negritude allows us to understand that Western Education in Africa has one sole objective-and that is to create slaves out of black people and maintain them in a lasting condition of servitude and lack of self-esteem whereby the Blacks shall revere the ‘Muzungu’ in all that he/she does- including
placing this Western Education on a high pedestal.

That is why we have many Africans who believe that the bastion of ‘education’ is Harvard, LSE, Cambridge and many other institutions that are steeped in the Western Education philosophy.

Secondly, when Dr. Adesina mentions that: ‘A tour of most African big cities such as Tripoli, Lagos and Abuja, Accra, Johannesburg, Cairo etc is a testimony
that there is a big growth/development in Africa. However, most foreigners do not like to visit cities in Africa; they prefer taking pictures in the countryside. And those that stayed in the cities never ever saw any lion crossing the road’ is evidence of this mental enslavement by the Eurocentric ideology because anybody who still believes in the Colonialist development model of building cities while largely neglecting the ‘countryside’ is not a progressive mind for Africa. This model is responsible for creating slums and upsetting our African principle mode of life i.e. Agriculture. Why should Nairobi house the largest slum in Africa while the ‘countryside’ of Kenya remains lush and fertile for serious agriculture that would feed the people twice as much as being a squatter would put on the table? Perhaps one reason would be that the black bourgeoisie such as the Kenyatta family- individuals who embraced Western Education fully, and other descendants of ruthless colonialists such as the Delemare Family hold vast amounts of land that have become legendary and are
many times celebrated in colonialist literature and movies that reminisce of white people hunting lions and drinking Tusker while watching the sun-set on the vast hills of Mama Africa. Also, it is the Western Education that is still being fed to the younger generation that does not allow them to ask the right questions about their history- because they are only taught His Story. So we weep about crime and poverty in Africa yet many times these criminals and the masses in general are not allowed to reclaim their land of which they could achieve very practical and life-sustaining solutions to their problems. So
Western Education has indoctrinated us with the mentality that development means sky-scrappers and the prospects of driving in gas guzzling Hammers and BMW’s like our Western brothers and sisters are doing in North America at the expense of dusty-faced Iraqis riding donkeys.

Dr. Adesina adds that: ‘Talking about slave trade and loss of identity is not what occupied most educated African minds right now. Our priorities is how to develop our youths leadership skills, organize our communities, develop rural areas, train our people how to use technology so that we can quickly move forward. Talking about race, identity, reparation, western
education and the other negative thoughts will not move us forward.’ To this, id like to first inform him that I am at least one African whose mind is occupied by talking about the Atlantic Slave Trade- because as it lasted for more than four centuries, the States that now claim to be our ‘development partners’ sanctioned this brutality while making massive profits not only from produced commodities but by free labor by our black brothers and sisters who split rock to build Liverpool, Massachusetts and London that are now bastions of this ‘development’ model that is being imposed on Africa. While I am also an activist developing practical solutions to urban-rural poverty challenges, I also strongly demand for Reparations from these States that are still very much in existence and are still practicing other forms of slavery today. If the Jews are constantly reminding
themselves and the world of their holocaust- while they also receive massive amounts of money in compensation for their horrendous experience, then why shouldn’t Africa talk about her holocaust and the legacy of suffering that is still very much with us today? The White American’s can afford to celebrate ‘Thanksgiving day’ because they not only have the
power to, but also because they have convinced us through this ‘Western Education’ that we shouldn’t discuss their history of genocide against the Native American’s in the name of ‘Thanksgiving’!

Finally, I will respond to what Dr. Adesina describes as the substance of his African-ness: ‘I am an African, and will always be. I will wear my African native dress in Washington DC, to the White House if invited; go to groceries store in Canada, USA, and London in my native attire. I will speak my language in public places in America and in their buses, train,
and restaurant. I will organize lectures on Africa heritage/culture to promote my identity. However, I
will not put blame on African colonial past on innocent present generation.’ I commend him for
maintaining certain aspects of Africa even if he is far away from the continent, but sadly enough, and as the old-adage says ‘it will not affect the rice prices in Abuja, or Iture, or Kakamega, or Gisenyi’. He may afford to maintain his African-ness to this degree,
but it is not enough for our continent. We, the younger generation, are starting to discover that the beginning of our victory against poverty and backwardness begins with the total and complete emancipation of our minds, a reclaiming of our proper
identity by re-reading our story (not His Story), a healthy dose of a progressive and liberatory ideology (read Pan Africanism) which will allow us to conceive
of a free Africa thus permitting us to achieve this free Africa.

Tell the Jews to stop talking about their Holocaust, tell the British to stop showing the world documentaries of their lost ones in the World Wars, tell the White American to stop celebrating
‘Thanksgiving’ and trumpeting their self-proclaimed title as the ‘vanguards of democracy’, and ill stop talking about the African Holocaust, Reparations, Colonialism, White Supremacy, Western Education, unfair Trade practices, who killed Lumumba and
overthrew Nkrumah, and other important elements of my
story.

Paulo Freire told us in his ‘Pedagogy of the Oppressed’ that one of the highest levels of
oppression is when the oppressed begin to defend the oppressor- because their oppression has become their right, they deserve to be oppressed. Remember this,
and you will understand many ridiculous propositions that may come our way. And also the truism that ‘Facts are sacred, opinion free’: we were and still are
oppressed by bourgeoisie black and White oppressors-that is a fact, and we must not stop speaking about it.

For general wellbeing: If symptoms persist, seek History’s advice!

A loving and Revolutionary embrace to you all,

Kagenza Sakufi-Rumongi (Ph.D. –school of Afrikan reality, and I did my first diploma in Western Education)

Well, thanks to those who responded positively, neutrally, and negatively to my short article on "Africa is better off with Western Education".

The entire article is my opinion and it is left for readers to either swing to the right or to the left. One thing I know for sure is that, we have learned the white mans language, copied his medicine, use his transport system (I wonder why people can not walk to London/Canada from Africa?),played his sports, write using his alphabets, modernized our agricultural system, go to his school, copied his system of government, and military practices. Are we not better off? If not, please kindly reply to this post using:
1. A non-western education alphabet, preferably; one that originates from Africa and should contain none of the usual "A" through "Z" alphabet letters. Most Asian countries have developed their own alphabets (i.e. in China and Korea). That is what I want.

2. If you are able to write one, discuss why Africans will be better off using your non-western alphabet and how you will use that "alphabet" to re-write physics, biology, and mathematics text books; simple calculator manual, driving direction, etc.

If this is possible, I will agree that Africa is not better off with Western Education.

Thank once more

I bought a iFrogz Luxe case when I purchased my iPhone. It is a pretty nice case, but I wanted to know if there is something better out there. Since the iPhone is a really expensive phone with no insurance, I want to make sure I get a case that provides excellent all-around protection, while not damaging the phone itself (like the screen/back of phone).

I know that "none of the good deeds go unpunished" but of course in the heat of been a "Good Samaritan" i gave my car to a friend to drive until her car getting fixed in my garage. It lasted about a week and a half and she wrecked the car. Damage to other vehicle = none, according to her. My car is hit in the front radiator leaking and the hood and one of the headlights is smashed. She got a verbal estimate from some guy to fix it for a grand,(she is willing to pay me) which I doubt is enough because I am positive she overheated the engine on multiple occasions after the accident because she have told me she kept driving it until smoke came out of the engine compartment few times then she called me. I suspect that engine is a toast - the car is 95 Escort wgn with 200k. But I really babied that car and it was running almost (considering the age and miles) flawlessly.
Her insurance company said they will only process the claim as a secondary insurer and my provider will have to be a primary because the insurance follows the car not the driver - their exact words. I don't even want to call my insurance and ask because i suspect my rates will go way up and I have two teenagers in the house.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Hello I am new here. I’m sorry if thisis the wrong place for this but I was hopingsome one here on villagevolunteersforum.blogspot.com would be able to assist me. I'm switching car insurance companies soon, the new company will be inspecting my vehicle and taking photos before the policy goes into effect.
I have had a very small chip in my windshield for almost a year now. It can't be fixed since it's on the drivers side, and it's not worth replacing the windshield for. If the chip starts to crack or I get other chips, then I will replace it. Question is, will my new insurance company refuse all future claims regarding the windshield because it had this tiny chip before they started covering me? Even if a rock cracks the passenger side or something?

First off I would like to say great blog! I had a quick question which I'd like to ask if you don't
mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your head before
writing. I have had a tough time clearing my mind in getting my
ideas out. I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes
are wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin.
Any recommendations or tips? Appreciate it!
