This week I want us to talk about Race, What can and can't you say about it? Veteran scientist Dr. James Watson, who won a Nobel prize for unraveling the structure of DNA, was quoted in an English Newspaper as saying that Africans are less intelligent than Europeans. Regardless of whether you agree with his assertions or not should he or anyone else be allowed to make such comments? Or does race have to be removed from science's research? Are there some beliefs about race which are simply intolerable and deserve disassociation and condemnation? (Ros Atkins, BBC)

Personally, I find Dr. Watson's comments ridiculously hilarious, bigoted and ill informed. Though it is true that many rural Africans would do poorly on a Western style IQ test, their failure wouldn't be because of a lesser intelligence than their European brothers. It would simply be because of the environmental affordances most of
them cannot access on the continent. These items include decent schools, books, magazines, internet and television. Comparing the IQ test (intelligence) of a
middle class European with access to these goodies, to that of a poor nomad herds boy is being mischievous. Obviously, the two are not of the same school.
As I'm currently learning in one of my classes, race and racism is an invented concept to achieve structural advantage. And by golly it has worked. By comparing African schools to American schools (although some of our own schools struggle greatly) I could understand how there is an education gap. But after spending time in rural Kenyan schools, I firmly believe a selected age group of Kenyans would be smarter than the same selected public school educated Americans. And spending time with some community members and seeing their vast knowledge on the environment and politics I feel Dr. Watson's comments are also ill informed. If anything, Africans have to be smarter to be able to survive in an environment where everything is a challenge while here in America everything is so easy it's done with little or no thought.
its interesting how some will say that his comments should be respected because of so called "academic freedom of speech" but if the same Dr. had spoken in support of terrorism he would be in a holding cell faster than you can blink.
intelligence cannot be measured objectively. it is selective. it cannot be compartmentalised such that if you fulfil a b and c then you are more intelligent. education is only a small part of it. there are a variety of aspects such as emotional intelligence, logic, rationality and street smarts.
Anyone and everyone has a right to an opinion (that, I guess, includes me, so hear goes!!)
The problem is that sometimes those opinions are uneducated, unresearched and unsupportable. If Dr Watson had real evidence to support his opinion, he would not have been met with so much hostility. Concern, shock, scientific disbelief and curiosity, amusement.. any of a whole range of reactions. Indeed, if his opinion was that Black Folks are superior to other races (as we constantly hear in athletic feats, in certain forms of entertainment, even as being just plain hospitable folks) I suppose those among us that are so incensed would be laughing and some might even be saying –Its about time!!!
I’ve just been talking to a white student, just a few minutes ago (actually in between writing the above paragraph) and he was complaining about the amount of racism directed towards white people in Kenya. We seem to think its ok to do it, and in fact, Kenyans have long had racist attitudes towards Kenyans of Asian origin and more recently, towards Kenyans of Somali origin. The student reminded me that its always been easier for us to see things from our side, but not from the other. And, if I may now ask, what do we want to do about our own prejudices and biases, most of which are, just like Dr Watson’s’, unsupportable?
It’s my conviction that to change others (if there needs to be any need for changing what other people believe) WE must first change. Just like I think its true that we see in others that which we already have, I believe that the anger we direct to those who believe a group of people are inferior (or superior for that matter) because of their race could be a clever cover for our own similar tendencies, in which case that energy could be far better used in other ways. After all, in most countries there are laws against discrimination. Thus, if I feel subjected to unfair treatment due to my status as a member of one group or community, I should be able to seek some redemption from the law. Anything else… well, if someone thinks I’m a dog, I know I’m not, but I think s/h has a reason for calling me a dog. It could be fear, it could be hate, it could be they have never seen a dog… any amount of reasons, both good and bad. But why should I waste my time and energy getting all worked up about it? Call me what you want. I know what I am and what I’m not, and so long as what I am is not defined as illegal, then I DON’T HAVE TO PROVE IT TO ANYONE. All I can do is show you that despite what you think of me, I think we’re equal in all aspects, if given the same background and resources. And if you care to think about it, you too would agree. After all, if any of us black folks had been born different, who says we would be any better than the Dr Watson’s of this world? Heck, forget about crossing racial boundaries: we even discriminate against our very own kind, on political, social, economic, tribal, religious and cultural grounds. Is that any better?

Racism is absolutely an invented concept, and yet it is SOOO difficult to unravel because it is so ingrained. Just like Kimi said, racism exists in so many forms and not only from people of different races but also of the SAME race, how do we UNinvent racism?! As a white American having been to East Africa, it is more clear to me than ever just how massive racism really is.
As for Dr. Watson's comments regarding European superiority, they are a perfect example of just how disgustingly ingrained racism is _everywhere_. After all, this is a highly educated, intelligent man, right? Obviously his emotional IQ is lacking. It would be interesting to research what part of the brain is responsible for racist thoughts and behaviors. Then we might be able to understand how old racism really is and if it had some useful purpose at some point in the past. There have been other studies to isolate the part of our brains responsible for various things, why not racism?
If we understand it better, then it may become easier to unravel it. Because just as many invented concepts and structures become outdated and warped, racism is one that could surely destroy the planet if it continues the way it has.
You have all made good points, and I agree that we all must examine our own biases and anger if we are to change (improve) the greater world.
I am a big believer in the "multiple intelligence" concept,
meaning that different people are gifted in all kinds of different
areas: cognitive, social, artistic, etc. I think that most standardized
IQ tests rely heavily on cognitive data that was developed by western
scientists. They are definitely culturally biased, so as long as we
measure one culture against the standards of another, we get skewed
results. I also believe that being very smart (smarter than most people) is not necessarily a good thing; it almost always means a deficiency in another area, usually social.
Response to Dr. Watson and my fellow Africans-
conscious or reactionary (all of you)
Indeed they were disturbing comments- hard to swallow
at first, but they made me think. I will submit to you
that I welcome Dr. Watson¡¦s comments, everybody is
entitled to his/her own opinions- be they Nobel
Laureates or white supremacist ideologues, or white
supremacist ideologues veiled as Nobel Laureates, each
man/woman belonging to the human race has the right to
submit their opinions. And it is with this regard that
Dr. Watson remains a free man- at least free from any
court battles or burning at the stake, there are no
longer any gauntlets to serve for his punishment, we
couldn¡¦t hold a Rivonia Trial because there is no
Robben Island where we could lock him up for 20+ years
(eihh, these guys have really been inventive when it
comes to oppressing black people!) All we are able to
do is react in our best capacities, and we should
underline that, our best capacities, because it is
usually from the reaction that we gauge how
controversial a statement is- or how much it affected
the intended audience, and how prepared they were!
Controversial it may be, but once again, I welcome Dr.
Watson¡¦s comments, because we black people are
controversial- especially in this day and age. It
reminds me of a recent incident when the white
American journalist Imus commented on a college ladies
basketball game- referring to the all black ladies
team, he called then ¡¥nappy hoes¡¦. Then all of a
sudden, Black America was up in arms, ready to skin
him alive for having called our sisters ¡¥nappy
hoes¡¦- our dignified and respected sisters. But how
many times do black men- and women too, call their own
people ¡¥nappy hoes¡¦, and even employ much worse
labels? Now, I am not suggesting that he was correct
to describe them as such, but allow for some candid
reflection and let¡¦s expose the double standards and
hypocrisy if any. The multi-million Hip-Hop Industry
is multiplying its profits overnight, consumers seem
to enjoy the more innovative styles that are emerging
by the day- it also seems that the more explicit and
uncouth the lyrics and images are, the more ¡¥cool¡¦
or ¡¥gangsta¡¦ the styles become- and they buy more.
But who do you think are the main ¡¥spokespersons¡¦
for this profitable Industry - is it Michael Bolton
singing ¡¥everyday im hustling¡¦? perhaps its Kenny
Rogers promoting ¡¥stunner¡¦ sunglasses, or Celine
Dion talking about how much of a ¡¥bitch¡¦ she is
while proudly announcing that she likes a man with a
¡¥drop top car and lots of dough¡¦? Maybe I missed
that video where Backstreet Boys contemplated
¡¥leaning back¡¦ while the Dixie Chicks thrillingly
¡¥dropped it like it was hot¡¦. I know my examples may
not be up to date, but the point is this: we are not
being part of the solution by continuously degrading
ourselves- our brothers and sisters, we are only
perpetuating the images that the white supremacist
ideology is comfortable with- images where the best
measure of a black youth¡¦s ambition is in how much
champagne glasses he hopes to drink at the next house
party, images where the most beautiful aspect of our
black sisters is their ¡¥big booties¡¦ and sluttish
mannerisms ( I am furious, but im still typing). And
so the arguments brought out in a recent Ebony
magazine devoted to the Imus ¡¥scandal¡¦- while it
carried a very balanced compilation of responses, were
still laced with the unintelligent statement that ¡¥if
you don¡¦t belong in the community, you cant say
certain words¡¦ ?!? People are still defending their
right to call each other Niggers and Bitches-
occasionally arguing along the lines of semantics! In
this day and age of a million and one-plus many more
challenges facing not only the black race worldwide
but issues threatening the very existence of humanity
(read climate change), a large section of our race are
still devoted to superficial arguments and investing
in devising newer and more fancy derogatory terms
whose only return on the investment is deeper
complexes that stoop us lower in the pit of identity
crisis. That is in the Diaspora.
At home, in Africa, we were also stunned by yet
another controversial comment. This time, it was a
President, his Excellency Nicolas Sarkozy of France-
do not be surprised, we already noted that white
supremacist ideologues camouflage in all sorts of
roles and identities. Speaking at the UNIVERSITY OF
CHEIKH ANTA DIOP in Dakar, capital of Senegal on the
26th of July, he mentioned with the confidence of an
anthropologist who has dusted bones and artifacts in
Egypt for 100 years, that:
¡¥The tragedy of Africa is that the African has not
fully entered into history. The African peasant, who
for thousands of years has lived according to the
seasons, whose life ideal was to be in harmony with
nature, only knew the eternal renewal of time,
rhythmed by the endless repetition of the same
gestures and the same words.
In this imaginary world where everything starts over
and over again there is no place for human adventure
or for the idea of progress.
In this universe where nature commands all, man
escapes from the anguish of history that torments
modern man, but he rests immobile in the centre of a
static order where everything seems to have been
written beforehand.
This man (the traditional African) never launched
himself towards the future. The idea never came to him
to get out of this repetition and to invent his own
destiny¡K
Africa¡¦s problem is to stop always repeating, always
mulling over, to liberate itself from the myth of the
eternal return. It is to realize that the golden age
that Africa is forever recalling will not return
because it has never existed.¡¦
It is open for your interpretation, but keep these
words in mind: white supremacy! White supremacy! White
supremacy! Back to my point.
[NOTE: The anatomy of both these statements is not
that they may hold close to anything resembling water,
but that that we as Black people, as Africans, may not
be doing much to challenge such illusions]
At home, in Africa, things aren¡¦t much different from
the condition of our brothers and sisters in the
Diaspora. Look around, do we see a race involved in
its search for her own inventiveness to contribute to
the progression of mankind- or do we see a race of
consumers? Do we see Black people in the arts, the
sciences, our teenagers, our parents, our presidents
rallying around the cause that Marcus Garvey called us
to: back to our roots- or do we see them proudly
declaring that they are ¡¥modern¡¦- in Polo Shirts,
Calvin Klein Cologne (Paris made, but do they say!),
those new female jeans that get tighter towards the
feet, and the doll shoes? Sarkozy was comfortable to
utter such words under the roof named after one of
Africa¡¦s greatest custodians of her rich cultural and
technological heritage- Professor Cheikh Anta Diop,
Senegalese historian and anthropologist, author of
groundbreaking and white-supremacist-myth busting
works including among many others: The African Origin
of Civilization: Myth or Reality, Civilization or
Barbarism: An Authentic Anthropology, Pre-colonial
Black Africa, Black Africa: The Economic and Cultural
Basis for a Federated State, because Sarkozy may be
comfortable to see that the first people to discard
their history and cultural heritage are the Africans
themselves- it may have appeared to him that we are on
his side, this is how:
Without getting into the more intricate measures of
¡¥development¡¦ or ¡¥progress¡¦, lets stick to the
more basics- those that we are directly in control of
as individuals within our own lives (more so, the
youth), and accordingly those that we can blame each
other for. Wherever you are in Africa- Arusha, Kigali,
Nairobi, or any other remote cities, what is the
common trend among we youth? It is fashion. And that
isn¡¦t surprising, I guess because we are at our
creative stages of our lives, trying to be cool and
whatever. But Fashion isn¡¦t bad, infact it isn¡¦t the
problem. The problem is that we are the largest
consumers of foreign fashions and products, which
doesn¡¦t make sense at all. If Dr. Watson is to be
proved wrong, perhaps would it help if he woke up one
day, looked around Africa (through some spectacular
binoculars, hopefully made in Africa) and saw African
youth hanging out at the malls dressed in typically
African attire- Kente cloth, mud cloth, tie and die
African print or whatever (I humbly suggest to you
that the next time you walk into a mall with a wallet
fattened by 100,200, or 300$ that you try hard and
remember the face of that African woman selling
Kitenge or any other local print and try to figure out
if she didn¡¦t need that money more than Polo, Tommy
Hilfiger, G-Unit, Sean John, Baby Phat or any other
self-esteem boosters you have so far paid rent for);
what if he saw a centre for Kiswahili studies in every
capital on the continent (its the most pan african
language); what if he saw Nigerian, Tanzanian,
Senegalese, Kenyan and many other African soap operas
screening on our Televisions; what if he tuned in to
One Africa F.M (my invention) to the sounds of Zulu
chants, Kinyarwanda rhythms, Hausa tunes, Shona
remixes and other ¡¥native¡¦ jams (he would probably
re-tune to Mozart FM or Tchaikovsky 100.3); what if
Dr. Watson woke up that morning when he decided to
utter his remarks, flipped through the daily paper,
tuned into his radio, switched on his TV and heard a
deafening announcement- through music, images, youth
activism, and political declarations (Africa Unite!),
that WE ARE PROUD TO BE BLACK, WE ARE PROUD TO BE
AFRICAN! Would he dare say what he said? I don¡¦t
think so- but what do I know, I don¡¦t have a Nobel
Prize...ha...ha...ha...
A strong African embrace and revolutionary greetings
to you all- Be proud, eat African, dress African,
laugh African, Love Africa!
Or better yet- a large wooden spoon of Africa a day
keeps the White Supremacist Ideologues away!

Before giving my opinion, it might be relevant to share that I am an American-born minority working in the healthcare profession where standardized tests are the norm (pardon the pun). Racisim is a topic I love to hate. I happen to agree with most of the comments so far.
1) IQ tests are inherently biased culturally, socio-economically, and (paradoxically) intellectually. There truly are many types of intelligence which are grossly divided between verbal & non-verbal. For a supposed scientist to make such a grandiose conclusion is absolutly ridiculous. A good scientific study compares two items that are exactly the same except for one variable in order to determine the effects of that one variable on the outcome. Comparing Africans to Europeans using any measure of intelligence created by Europeans is like comparing apples to ostriches using a calculator. It just doesn't make sense.
2a) As much as I'd like to agree that life in western cultures is mindnumbingly thoughless while rural Africans survive on instinctual intelligence, I can't. That would be making the same mistake as our Nobel gentleman. After seeing the conditions in rural Kenya myself, in my heart I do feel they are incredibly resourceful. But give the global human experience a little credit; switch the roles and imagine Caucasians in the Kenyan life-style. Wouldn't people of any race also be resourceful?
2b) I have to respectfully and overtly disagree with racism being an "invented concept". Yes it results in structural advantage. But "invented" implies it was an idea man created for his own purposes. Racism existed way back even before Jesus' time (e.g., Pharisees vs Samaritans); it's just part of human nature to be competitive. That "better than thou" attitude. I think some people took it to the extreme and so we ended up with things like the holocaust and black slavery. But I don't think they sat there and thought "hm. Let's raise our status by oppressing those who are different." Don't forget, racism/discrimination occurs not just between black/white. In America, there are prejudices against Asians, Hispanics, homosexuals, physical/mental disabilities, religions, etc. No one "invented" it.
3) In a way, people of a certain ethnicity calling each other names that others outside of that culture are not allowed to can be considered hypocrites. What's worse is the profit they're making off of perpetuating a negative image of themselves. However, it might be their way of self-defense and retaliation over white supremacy. It gives them some kind of power and control over the majority when they say "Hey, I can say that but you can't." And before we get into disagreements about whether white supremacy still exists (in America), I'd like to reference an article by Peggy McIntosh titled "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack". Answer yes or no:
- When I am told about our national heritage or about 'civilization,' I am shown that people of my color made it what it is.
- I can speak in public to a powerful male group without putting my race on trial.
- I am never asked to speak for all the people of my racial group.
- I can be pretty sure that if I ask to talk to the 'person in charge', I will be facing a person of my race.
- If a traffic cop pulls me over or if the IRS audits my tax return, I can be sure I haven't been singled out because of my race.
- I can easily buy posters, post-cards, picture books, greeting cards, dolls, toys and children's magazines featuring people of my race.
- I can worry about racism without being seen as self-interested or self-seeking.
- If I have low credibility as a leader I can be sure that my race is not the problem.
Did you say "yes" or "no" to most statements? Note that McIntosh's article listed 50 such statements. Where does your skin fit in on the color spectrum? Now re-consider Dr. Watson's speech.
4) Dr. watson appears to be, quite simply, an overly opinionated *$@& bloke. Wikipedia adds that, "On the issue of obesity, Watson has also been quoted as saying: "Whenever you interview fat people, you feel bad, because you know you're not going to hire them."
I have read the article and it comes at a time when the ugly head of social
discrimination is hot potato right now in Kenya (tribalism), here in Australia
(immigration minister made some racist remarks about Africans because of the
actions of a few Sudanese) and the US . All the 3 countries have something in
common - general elections are round the corner!!! Politicians and their lackeys
(scientists, journalists etc) know that nothing works like the old tactic of
divide and rule.

Not everyone is motivated by money, some people are motivated by hate or love of
other people

Aryan race- blue eyes blond hair etc. the crusaders of time gone spent their
energies spreading chrisitianity and death so should we be surprised if watson
believes black people are inferior? he is not the first neither is he the last.
the trick of course is who defines intelligence or lack of. - for example having
lived in Africa most of my life and the last 4 in Australia, i can assure you
that a lot of mzungus would have difficulties surviving in Africa if you were to
take away the money.

A response to Dr. Watson: continued¡K
There was a very interesting (perhaps naive) lady at
our recent Pan Africanist Forum on ¡¥Demystifying the African Identity- Session I¡¦ held on campus (USIU). We had just viewed a segment of Alex Haley¡¦s ¡¥Roots¡¦ chronicle- the part where Kunta Kinte is caught attempting to escape, he is tied up in the open
yard and whipped until he acknowledged his slave name
¡¥Toby¡¦; the question was whether an identity can be
imposed- either by force or through subtle means, on
any given individual. Anyway, this lady decided to
share with us her understanding of what it means to be
¡¥African¡¦- what her African identity meant to her.
She said that to her: ¡¥My Africaness is mainly within
my heart, my soul and my spirit¡¦ and that Africaness
to her meant fundamentally being ¡¥African¡¦ within
ourselves; point well delivered, and very relevant.
But the question was posed as to why she wore the
latest Western fashions- the jeans, the tops, the
shoes, and other adornments. Her response was that how
one dresses doesn¡¦t necessarily correlate to how one
thinks or feels. While this may be largely true, more
so with those who do not have the luxury of fashion
options, the disturbing realization to me was that we
have began defending the cultural elements of people
who are very alien from our experience as black
people. Here, we are talking about the ¡¥Economics of
Identity¡¦. This is what I mean:
So you look around the world today, in all the
continents on our globe. The Indian man/woman looks
Indian, dresses Indian, speaks ¡¥like an Indian¡¦,
eats Indian, and many times, smells Indian; the China
man/woman similarly is conspicuous in his/her own
aforementioned aspects; the American man/woman (white
American) has created his/her own distinctive
identity; and then stare closely at the African-
better yet, the Black man/woman any where in this
world (the elite i.e. educated, has options, access to
information of the history of Africa- the oppression,
the Civilizations, the challenges)- the African is not
the only one consuming Western products, but he/she is
the only one discarding his/her distinctive character-
language, dress, food, accent (this is crazy!), even
his/her own skin color (in the name of eyeliner,
shadow, foundation, and other facades of whitening
products- I call it the ¡¥Fair & Lovely Syndrome-
creating the White nigger)! The African has determined
to fit into all and any society he/she finds
himself/herself in- in Europe, in America, in Asia or
wherever.
NOTE: I just remembered a recent story (its relevant,
please read on). Launching the ¡¦50 years of
Independence¡¦ celebrations in March of this year, the
Ghanaian president John Kufuor committed the almost
equivalent of suicide. Kufuor rode in his presidential
parade wearing a neatly cut dark blue suit (possibly
Italian- don¡¦t they make the best ones?), he waved
and the people waved back, he gave his speech and the
people listened, but he still didn¡¦t get away with
it. What he seemed to somewhat forget was that
Ghanaians love their traditional attire- the Kente.
And while his best excuse shortly after the outrage
reached the long ears of state house was that ¡¥the
suit is an international dress, it does not mean I am
dressing European¡¦, the point still permeated through
his ¡¥mentally colonized¡¦ outlook, and it pinched his
native Ghanaian heart. So while on State visit to the
Queen of England soon after that, it was quite obvious
that his ¡¥sin¡¦ still rained heavy on his native
Ghanaian heart; at a State dinner party, President of
Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor stepped out to the flashes
of Royal photographers welcomed by Her Majesty the
Queen and walked with an understandable increase in
spring-of-step- he was wearing the Kente, wrapped
around his Niger-Delta Oil dark skin. He was
reaffirming to his people that he was yet to
completely abandon the Ghanaian identity- at least not
in the ¡¥international dress¡¦ again.
Where was I? Okay, we were observing the behavior of
the African with regard to his identity. The African
has formulated all sorts of reasons why not to dress
African- ohh, it is only for cultural events; ahh,
those things are for locals; eihh, African wear is too
expensive for me; man, I don¡¦t have to dress African,
I am African within my soul! As we continue to engage
in bitter arguments trying to convince each other of
what it means to be a genuine African, the
non-Africans- the foreigners have determined to help
us out. The Kikoy cloth- famous in Kenya has been
patented by the Japanese; the local Kenyan hand-bag,
commonly known as the ¡¥Kiondo¡¦ has also been sold to
the Japanese; the Kente of Ghana- royal attire for the
Ashanti Empire in Kumasi, has been bought by the

So this is the situation, we are selling ourselves to
the highest bidder. We remain comfortable to pay rent,
buy drinks, attract model-girlfriends, cater for trips
to Bahamas or Hawaii for Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klien,
Polo (must be British), and other Western designers.
And the African is well equipped with reasons as to
why he/she wears those self-esteem booster clothes;
all done with a stubborn attitude that what is
¡¥African¡¦ is ¡¥too local¡¦. Would the Japanese
afford our Kikoy and Kiondo if we were all buying
these products- as a result empowering our local
entrepreneurs and building our economies? Would the
Chinese dare come to the bargaining table if the Kente
was in high demand- by Africans? Do you ever picture
an African buying out Calkin Klien, or Polo, or
Hilfigger and moving the headquarters to Bangui or
Lubumbashi? (They would probably laugh at you but
still employ you¡Kto sweep the tailoring roomƒº )
My thoughts are running in all directions, but I must
remain on this track. To the elite African (most of
